Woodturning - A River Bowl !!

Materials Needed:

✔ Wood blank (with a crack, split, or intentionally cut void) – live-edge slabs work great!
✔ Clear casting epoxy resin (like Alumilite, ArtResin, or Liquid Glass)
✔ Resin dye (blue, turquoise, or any color you like) – mica powders or alcohol inks
✔ Melamine-coated MDF or silicone mold (for stabilizing the blank before turning)
✔ Lathe, turning tools (bowl gouge, scraper, parting tool)
✔ Safety gear (face shield, respirator for resin fumes)
✔ Clamps, tape, or mold sealant (to prevent resin leaks)

Step-by-Step Process:

1. Prepare the Wood Blank

  • Choose a wood blank with a natural crack or saw-cut a gap where you want the "river."

  • Seal the edges with tape or hot glue to create a dam (or use a silicone mold).

  • Ensure the blank is stable—some turners embed the wood in a resin block for extra support.

2. Pour the Resin "River"

  • Mix clear epoxy resin and add your chosen dye (blue/green is classic, but black, gold, or even glow-in-the-dark can look amazing).

  • Pour into the crack/mold and let it cure fully (usually 24–72 hours, depending on resin type).

  • Pro Tip: Use a heat gun or torch to pop bubbles for a crystal-clear finish.

3. Mount & Turn the Bowl

  • Once cured, mount the blank on the lathe using a faceplate or chuck.

  • Rough out the shape with a bowl gouge, then refine with a shear scrape for a smooth surface.

  • Sand progressively (80 → 400+ grit) to remove tool marks.

4. Finish for Maximum Wow Factor

  • Apply a food-safe finish (if functional) like walnut oil or beeswax.

  • For high-gloss resin, polish with micro-mesh pads (up to 12,000 grit) or a buffing wheel.

Design Variations:

🌿 Live Edge River Bowl – Keep one side natural with bark for rustic contrast.
💎 Glow-in-the-Dark Resin – Use luminous pigments for a night-time effect.
🔥 Burnt Wood & Resin – Char the wood (shou sugi ban) before resin pour.
🌈 Layered Colors – Pour multiple resin shades for a "flowing water" illusion.

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

❌ Resin leaks → Seal gaps thoroughly with tape/clay before pouring.
❌ Bubbles in resin → Use a pressure pot or torch to eliminate them.
❌ Tear-out on brittle wood → Sharpen tools often and take light passes.
