Zhuge Shenxian Knot. This is the magic buckle passed down to us

The Zhuge Shenxian Knot (诸葛神仙扣) is a legendary puzzle or mechanical device attributed to Zhuge Liang (181–234), the famous strategist and inventor of the Three Kingdoms period in Chinese history. It is said to be an intricate locking mechanism or interlocking puzzle that only those with exceptional intelligence can solve.

Features of the Zhuge Shenxian Knot:

  1. Complex Interlocking Design – The knot (or puzzle) consists of multiple interwoven parts that must be disassembled and reassembled in a specific way.

  2. No Visible Weak Points – Unlike ordinary knots, it has no obvious starting or ending point, making it extremely difficult to untangle.

  3. Historical & Cultural Significance – It is associated with Zhuge Liang’s reputation as a master of strategy, mechanics, and puzzles.

  4. Used for Training & Testing – Some legends say it was used to test the intelligence of military officers or scholars.

Possible Interpretations:

  • A Tangled Rope Puzzle – Similar to the "Chinese Ring Puzzle" or "Lucky Knot," where the goal is to disentangle loops.

  • A Mechanical Lock – Some believe it was a security device for important documents or treasures.

  • A Metaphor for Strategy – Just as the knot seems unsolvable at first, Zhuge Liang’s tactics appeared impossible to counter.

Modern Usage:

Today, similar puzzles are sold as brain teasers under names like:

  • "Zhuge Lock" (孔明锁, Kongming Lock) – A series of interlocking wooden pieces.

  • "Chinese Ring Puzzle" – A metal or rope disentanglement challenge.
